How flexible is the schedule, and can I request specific time off?
The schedule for the UTP Internship is generally not flexible due to the high-paced nature of the job and the need for teammates to rely on each other for success. While we understand and can be flexible for urgent family matters, such as weddings or emergencies, days off during events are not available. This is because the team environment and event operations depend heavily on everyone being present and contributing.
What is the work environment, especially given the outdoor nature of the job?
The work environment for the UTP Internship is primarily outdoors, and it can get extremely hot. In Panama City Beach, FL, Destin, FL, and Gulf Shores, AL, average temperatures for June and July range from 85°F to 95°F. When you factor in the heat index, it often feels closer to 100°F to 110°F, especially during the afternoons.
We encourage all staff to take precautions such as staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, staying in the shade whenever possible, and wearing hats and sunglasses. The uniforms provided are very light to help keep staff as cool and comfortable as possible. However, if you feel you may not be able to withstand these conditions, we ask you to carefully consider whether this internship is the right fit for you.
What are the living arrangements if housing is provided?
If you require housing, UTP provides clean, safe accommodations for interns traveling more than 60 minutes outside of the area. While the housing is co-ed, the sleeping quarters are split by gender, and you will be required to have roommates. The housing is more "Summer Camp" style, meaning the houses are typically older without fancy fixtures or amenities, like a washer and dryer. Background checks are required for anyone staying in UTP housing.
What kind of supervision will interns have during the program?
During the UTP Internship, while UTP staff may not always stay in the same housing as the interns, they are always in the area throughout the internship. UTP conducts random weekly house checks to ensure that the housing remains free of non-UTP staff/visitors, drugs, alcohol, and that overall cleanliness has been maintained. This supervision ensures a safe and productive living environment for everyone involved.
What kind of support is available if there are any issues or concerns during the internship?
If any issues or concerns arise during the UTP Internship, support is readily available. Interns can reach out directly to UTP staff, who are always in the area and accessible throughout the program. Additionally, regular check-ins and communication with supervisors are encouraged to ensure any problems are addressed promptly. UTP staff is committed to providing guidance and resolving concerns to ensure a positive internship experience.
How does the UTP software work, and how will I be trained to use it?
Leading up to the summer, you’ll receive weekly training videos to help you get familiar with UTP's software. These videos are 15-30+ minutes long, followed by a quick quiz, and can be completed at your own pace. While these online trainings aren’t mandatory and are not compensated, they are strongly encouraged to ensure your success. Additionally, there will be a compensated in-person training day at the start of the internship to give you hands-on experience with the software and prepare you for your role.
What should I bring with me to the internship (clothing, supplies, etc.)?
For the UTP Internship, you should bring:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing: Since you’ll be working outdoors in hot weather, it’s important to wear light, comfortable clothing. UTP will provide uniforms, but you’ll still want to pack appropriate clothing for when you’re not working.
- Comfortable shoes: You’ll be on your feet for long hours, so make sure to have durable, comfortable footwear.
- Sun protection: Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.
- Refillable water bottle: Staying hydrated is key, so a refillable water bottle is a must.
- Personal items: While UTP provides housing, be sure to bring your own toiletries, towels, and food.
- Laptop: It’s useful for completing training modules and used at the worksite.
Make sure to prepare for both work and downtime, keeping the outdoor environment in mind!
How many years have you been running this internship?
The UTP Internship has been running since 2020, but we began our business in this area in 2013, establishing a strong foundation in sports events and custom product services.
Have any interns ever been sent home before completing their internship?
Yes, while we strive to select the best candidates, interns may be asked to leave if they are not contributing fully to the team, even after multiple attempts at correction. This internship is physically, mentally, and teamwork demanding, and it's our responsibility to ensure that everyone is performing and contributing at the highest level possible. Interns may also be asked to leave for other reasons, including but not limited to drug use, alcohol found in UTP housing, or inviting non-UTP staff into the housing.
How will performance be evaluated, and what opportunities for advancement are there?
Performance during the UTP Internship is evaluated by our on-site managers, who offer valuable instant feedback to help you grow throughout the program. Additionally, an end-of-internship performance review can be provided upon request, which you can use for future employment opportunities or personal development. While advancements during the internship itself are limited due to its short duration, there may be future opportunities within UTP for those who perform well and demonstrate potential for growth.
What opportunities are there for personal and team development outside of work hours?
You may have the chance to attend a coaches' meeting, where you could be asked to speak in front of 100+ coaches on a stage, which is a great way to build public speaking and leadership skills. Additionally, for the longer internship programs, UTP provides fun team bonding experiences to strengthen relationships and encourage teamwork among interns.
What are the possibilities for continued involvement with UTP after the internship ends?
UTP has locations across the U.S., and if you’re interested in continuing with UTP after the summer, we’re happy to make introductions to local UTP locations. However, it’s important to note that all UTP locations are independently owned and operated outside of the summer internship, which is run by the UTP Headquarters staff.
When will the final decision be made on selected interns, and how will we be notified?
Final decisions on selected interns will be made throughout the month of March. You will be notified via email of the outcome of your application. Make sure to keep an eye on your inbox during this time for any updates regarding your selection status.
